Achievements
Nowadays the Association “BIOLan Ukraine” includes more than 100 members, among whom there are 30 certified organic farming enterprises, the total area of which makes 4500 ha.In 2006 the Association developed the first Standards of organic production in Ukraine, which underwent a positive review in Swiss Research Institute of the Organic Agriculture. The Standards totally meet the EU Council Regulation 2092/91 as well as the standards of the International Federation of the Organic Movement (IFOAM). In January 2007 the Association was one of the founders of the Ukrainian Certification Company Organic Standard, which provides services on enterprises inspection and certification according to Ukrainian and international standards of organic production. It is the only company that certifies according to BIOLan standards. The essential achievement of the year 2007 is the appearance on a market of the first Ukrainian organic products with the BIOLan Label. At the beginning of the summer in Kyiv supermarkets the following organic vegetables were introduced - potatoes, beets, and carrots. Now the next “organic set” appears in the supermarkets: buckwheat, barley, pearl, wheat groats. The market research shows that consumers are interested first of all in fresh vegetables and fruits, i.e. products, that nowadays contain too much of nitrates, nitrites and other chemicals, and in infant food there is only one distributor of the certified organic powdered baby milk, pabulum, puree, which unfortunately is not Ukrainian. The Head of BIOLan Association Vasyl Pyndus claims that meat, diary products, and groats also have a positive selling perspective. As a matter of fact, the first selling of vegetables in Kyiv supermarkets shows a great consumers' interest in organic products. Ukrainian consumers become more and more careful and serious regarding the food choice. Taking into consideration a prompt demand increase for organic products in Europe (e.g. in Germany the demand for carrots increased by 15% in comparison to 2006, while the areas occupied by the organic farms increased only by 2.3%) one can forecast a demand for this product in Ukraine as well.In May 2008, "BIOLan Ukraine" Association become a member of the International Federation of the Organic Movement (IFOAM).
